I bet sharing a room helps kids be heavier sleepers, too. And I learned at college that it's really nice to be a heavy sleeper.

Unless you have an early class, then you might miss your alarm clock.

i tend to be a heavy sleeper. there will be huge storms (meaning loud thunder and lots of wind), or an emergancy vehicle going pst the house, and mom and dante will ask the next day "did you hear that mindy?" nope, nope i didn't. but i always hear my alarm, which is a lot softer than those

I'm the same as you Melinda. Did I tell you what happened when Jill and I were going back to Idaho from our Europe trip? Jill and I got on the plane to SLC, put on our sleeping masks and went to sleep. We arrived at SLC two hours late. It wasn't until we were waiting for our shuttle that we learned that in New York, we'd sat on the tarmac for two hours before lifting off. Reportedly, people had been upset (and probably yelling. I forget), airplane people were talking on the intercom, and generally being noisy. Didn't hear a thing.
On the other hand, I wake up really well to alarms. If I get up at my usual time (7:00, unless I have to work early or I'm tired), I can usually turn off my alarm while my CD alarm clock is still spinning the CD in preparation (On a related note, I hate that noise). I had a number of classes at 7:45 or 8:00, and I never slept through my alarm and missed one. I've fallen asleep during classes...
One semester, Jill regularly got up before I did, and I eventually got so I would sleep through her alarm, but I wouldn't sleep through mine.
And my mom has said many times, "That storm kept me up all night. All the thunder and lightning." To which I'd reply, "Storm? There was a storm last night?"

I was afraid that if I slept though Jill's alarm, I'd start sleeping though mine, but it wasn't a problem So I'm probably weird, but in a very good way.

And it's nice when that way is helpful. I used to want to be a light sleeper, because in books, being a light sleeper is helpful. But in college...

It's all mental. If you mentally prep yourself to hear your alarm, then you'll hear it. If you tell yourself you don't want to wake up to your alarm, eventually you won't. There is one alarm clock I never hear because I trained myself, subconsciously, to not hear it. But I always wake up to my other alarm clocks, usually within a split second or so. But I can sleep through almost anything, including (literally) a train. Having to learn to sleep through a train travelling 10 feet outside your bedroom window will do that to you.
